College Roundup: Cuesta basketball teams to open conference play

The Cuesta men’s basketball team will play its first two Western State Conference matchups this week, as the Cougars travel to Ventura (8-9) today and then host Allan Hancock (11-4) on Saturday.

Both tips are set for 7 p.m.

Cuesta (12-6) is off to a hot start through its nonconference schedule, primarily behind Calen Coleman. He’s led the Cougars in scoring nine times this season, scoring a season-best 27 points twice.

Cuesta and Hancock are the only two WSC Northern Division teams ranked in the top 15 SoCal regional poll. The Cougars are ranked 12th, and the Bulldogs are ranked 15th. Neither is ranked in the statewide poll.

The Cuesta women’s basketball team (8-7) will travel to play Ventura (17-1) today as well, and then come home to host Allan Hancock (4-10) on Saturday. Both tips are set for 5 p.m.

Ventura is the top-ranked women’s team in the state meet.

Cal Poly signs junior college lineman

College of San Mateo defensive lineman Barrett Wangara has signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Cal Poly.

Wangara helped the Bulldogs to an 8-3 record and the California state championship in November. He received first-team All-American California Football Association honors after recording 35 tackles, four tackles four loss and three sacks.

In 2010, Wangara had 23 tackles, and 1.5 tackles for loss as a freshman.

Prior to attending College of San Mateo, he attended Capuchino High in San Bruno, where he lettered in both football and track and field (discus and shot put).
