College Roundup: Cuesta softball team sweeps L.A. Pierce

The Cuesta College softball team swept L.A. Pierce in a Western State softball doubleheader at home Thursday.

The Cougars defeated the Brahmas 9-5 in the first game and then shut out the Brahmas 11-0 in the second game.

Liz Isaak started the first game for the Cougars and pitched all seven innings, allowing five earned runs off three hits. Cuesta scored five runs in the second inning and, after Pierce tied the score at 5, scored two more in the fourth. The Cougars would pour on two more in the sixth.

In the second game, Ashley Dooley led the Cougars with a 3-for-4 effort. Danielle Herrera, Taylor Kalman, Kelly Lockwood and Devin Oddenino all went 2 for 3 against Pierce.

Cal Poly wrestlers earn academic honors

Two Cal Poly wrestlers were named Thursday to the Pac-10 Conference all-academic team.

Stephen Thalin, a civil engineering senior from San Jose with a 3.32 grade-point average, earned first-team honors. He went 11-12 this past season at 149 pounds.

Teammate Jacob Tanenbaum, a kinesiology sophomore from Leawood, Kan., with a 3.19 GPA, earned second-team distinction. He was 17-13 this season at either 125 or 133 pounds.
