College Roundup: Cuesta's Locher named conference coach of the year

Cuesta College cross country coach Brian Locher has been named the Western State Conference coach of the year.

Locher guided both Cuesta teams to the state meets earlier this season with the men finishing a program-best 11th and the women finishing 17th.

It was the third straight year the Cougars sent both teams to the state meet.

Cuesta’s Travis Hallanan, Gordon Sturgess and Oscar Pena were all named to the men’s WSC first team. Hallanan and Sturgess are both Paso Robles High graduates.

Paul Jackson and Tyler Gates were named to the men’s second team, and Ruben Aguilar and Micah Silver were honorable mention selections. Aguilar is a Morro Bay High graduate.

On the women’s side, Cuesta placed Templeton High graduate Kasey Urman on the first team, Kristen Hessick and Lizzie Uscanga to the second team, and Atascadero High graduate Jen Delgadillo was an honorable mention selection.

Cuesta athletes of the month

Nestor Ruelas and Ensley Allmon have been named Cuesta College’s athletes of the month for December.

Ruelas, a 141-pounder, set a school record with 33 wins and a school record with 46 bouts. He helped lead the Cougars to the WSC title and a second-place finish at the Southern California Regional Championships.

Allmon, the setter on the Cuesta volleyball team, led the Cougars in hitting percentage (.299) and service aces (24) while handing out 579 assists in 21 matches. She was a first-team all-WSC player for the 11-11 Cougars.
