In the first half, the Cuesta College men’s basketball team looked like a team coming off a 10-day stretch without a game, and although the Cougars would eventually charge back to take a slim lead over Consumnes River, they fell victim to foul trouble and lost 75-64 on Thursday.
The Cougars (2-2) opened the Mendocino College basketball tournament against the Hawks, a team that finished last season ranked third in the state.
Cuesta, which averages just over 25 3-point attempts per game on the year, couldn’t find a way to get it going in the first half, shooting 26 percent from the field (9 for 35) and just 1 of 6 from long range.
Three of Cuesta’s five starters were in foul trouble throughout the game, culminating in forward Sam Milhous fouling out.
