Despite clawing back to tie the score in the ninth inning, the Cuesta College baseball team dropped the opener of a Southern California best-of-three playoff series 5-4 to San Diego City College on Friday.
Ty Muller had a home run and a double for Cuesta (20-18), which fought back from a 4-2 deficit with two runs in the ninth inning.The Cougars had a chance to take the lead, but a runner was thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning.
Jake Reed allowed four runs in eight innings for Cuesta, which will look to stave off elimination at 11 this morning in Game 2. A third game will be made immediately afterward if necessary.

Cal Poly’s Dominic Byrne is fifth in the men’s decathlon after the first day of the Big West Conference Championships.
Byrne’s best efforts were in the running events, scoring 748 points in both the 100 (11.52 seconds) and the 400 (51.48).
Byrne has 3,522 points. Robert Robinson of Cal State Northridge leads with 4,070.
Cal Poly’s Corbin Duer is sixth with 3,501 points, and Jordan Goffena is ninth with 3,444.
On the women’s side, Cal Poly’s Sara Klein is seventh in the heptathlon with 2,796 points. She scored 802 points in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 15.30.
UC Santa Barbara’s Barbara Nwaba leads the heptathlon with 3,420 points.
