Xavier Mylleville and Roger Guardia scored 22 points apiece to lead the Cuesta College men’s basketball team to a 74-68 win over Ventura on Wednesday.
Ventura led 30-29 at halftime and finished with a 41-22 rebounding edge.
Cuesta (21-5, 7-1 Western State Conference) shot 48 percent from the floor while holding Ventura to 40 percent. The Pirates (6-14, 3-6) shot just 12 percent from beyond the arc.
Cougars guard Henok Yigzaw scored 10 points before being lost to a knee injury.
“It was a very costly game for us,” Cuesta head coach Rusty Blair said. “It could jeopardize his overall career and his career at Cuesta.”
The injury was bad enough that the game had to be delayed by nearly 45 minutes before Yigzaw could leave the court and be placed in an ambulance.
Lauren Maurer scored 11 points as the Cuesta College women’s basketball team fell to No. 1 Ventura 66-26.
Ventura (25-1, 8-0 WSC) led 32-8 at halftime.
Cathy Jones added five points for the Cougars (4-17, 1-7)
