Roger Guardia led Cuesta College with 24 points in its 74-72 win over Fresno City College on Monday at the Hancock College Tournament.
Henok Yizsaw followed Guardia with 17 points and teammate Phillip Jimenez added 15 points for the Cougars (13-3). Cuesta led 38-34 at halftime.
“We played intense defense, especially in the first 15 minutes,” Cuesta coach Rusty Blair said. “This (Fresno) was a team averaging in the 80s.”
According to Blair, the Cougars were forced to create a makeshift lineup after Xavier Mylleville got into foul trouble and eventually fouled out of the game.

Cuesta led by six points in the final seconds. Fresno cut the Cougars lead to four, and Cuesta turned over the ball with six seconds left and fouled a Fresno player attempting a 3-pointer. He made the first two free throws, missed the second and Fresno corralled the rebound, but missed a wide-open layup at the buzzer that would have forced overtime.
