With the Cuesta College men’s basketball team’s lead down to just four, reserve Ralphie Santos got key a steal and an assist to spur the Cougars to a 64-52 win over Merritt in the consolation championship of the Quinn Henry Memorial Tournament at Foothill College.
Santos had four points and three rebounds in limited minutes, but his steal early in the second half woke up Cuesta (10-2), which extended its lead to 20 points with about 6 minutes left to play, according to Cougars head coach Rusty Blair.
“His stats aren’t real spectacular,” Blair said, “but he gets the accolades for starting that spark in the second half when the game was stagnating.”
Seth Koenig scored a game-high 18 points, Roger Guardia had 16 points and 10 rebounds — with 13 points and eight rebounds coming in the second half — and all-tournament-team honoree Xavier Mylleville had six points, eight rebounds and a game-high four blocks for the Cougars.
