College Roundup: Cuesta women win season opener

The Cuesta College women’s basketball team won its season opener at home Wednesday evening, edging Monterey Peninsula 47-45.

Raleigh O’Brien led the Cougars with 18 points on 7-of-22 shooting, including going 3-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Lauren Maurer had a game-high 13 rebounds for Cuesta. The Cougars’ Erika Wilhelm, of Morro Bay High, had two points and three rebounds in limited action. Rochelle Welsh led the Lobos with 13 points.

Cal Poly swimmers honored

Cal Poly’s Peter Kline and Angie Haven have won the Big West Conference’s men’s and women’s swimming athlete of the week honors, respectively.

At last weekend’s Cal Poly Shootout, Kline won the 200 freestyle (1 minute, 43.11 seconds), 200 backstroke (1:50.38), 200 individual medley (1:53.87) and 400 individual medley (3:57.43). His 400 IM time is the third-fastest in the NCAA so far this season.

Haven, a freshman won the 100 butterfly (57.59), 100 breaststroke (1:04.09) and 200 breaststroke (2:16.99) at the Cal Poly Shootout.

Cuesta's Guardia honored

Cuesta College men’s basketball Roger Guardia has been named the Western State Conference player of the week.

At last weekend’s Rabobank Tournament at Cuesta, Guardia scored 58 points in three games for the Cougars, who won the tournament championship.

He was 20 of 34 from the field and was 9 of 13 from 3-point range in the three games.
