Cal Poly freshman goalkeeper Sophia Brown was selected Monday as the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week following the opening weekend of the women’s soccer season.
A native of Pleasanton, Brown made 10 saves during the Mustangs’ season-opening loss at No. 18 Cal on Friday. She made two more stops in Cal Poly’s 2-0 win against Pacific on Sunday afternoon.
Brown’s combined .923 save percentage was the highest among Big West competitors. As a senior at Foothill High last year, Brown was named the overall CIF Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
UC Santa Barbara’s Amanda Ball earned Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors after recording a hat trick in the Gauchos’ 3-2 victory against Fresno State.
