The Cal Poly women’s soccer team was picked to finish fifth in the nine-team Big West Conference this fall, according to a poll of conference coaches released Thursday.

Senior midfielder Megan Abutin also was named to the preseason all-conference team for the Mustangs, who play their season opener Aug. 19 at Cal.

A San Diego native and Mt. Carmel High graduate, Abutin has scored 14 goals and handed out 20 assists — No. 2 on Cal Poly’s all-time list — during her 58-game career. Five more assists this season will make Abutin the Mustangs’ career leader.

Long Beach State was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Big West title and received six first-place votes. UC Santa Barbara garnered two first-place votes and was second in the team voting, followed by CSUN, Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly.

UC Riverside was picked sixth, followed by UC Irvine, UC Davis and Hawaii.
