The Cal Poly track and field team wrapped up its season at the three-day NCAA Track and Field Championships’ West Preliminary Round on Saturday in Kansas.
The meet included 120 schools west of the Mississippi River and sent each of the top-12 finishers from each event to the national finals in Eugene, Oregon, which begins June 8.
The Mustangs top finisher was freshman Peyton Bilo, who finished 18th in the women’s 5,000 meters (16:42.83). Another freshman, Katie Izzo, finished 25th in the women’s 1,500 meter quarterfinals with a time of 4 minutes, 26.16 seconds.
Junior Arnie Sambel finished 38th overall in the discus, recording a throw of 161 feet, 9 inches. A back-to-back regional qualifier, Sambel is currently fourth on the all-time list at Cal Poly with a record throw of 175 feet.

Clayton Hutchins was 27th in the men’s 5,000 at 14:32.62 and junior teammate Swarnjit Boyal was 41st (15:19.90).
Senior and Big West champion Kendal Nielsen was 40th in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 39 feet, 6 inches.
