Cal Poly baseball team loses series opener at Riverside

The Cal Poly baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game Big West Conference series to UC Riverside 6-4 on Friday night at Riverside.

The Highlanders hit three home runs — two by Aaron Cisneros and another by Colby Schultz.

The Mustangs (29-23, 9-10) scored three runs in the fifth inning to the score 3-3, but the Highlanders (23-27, 9-10) added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the win.

Cisneros is one shy of the Big West lead in home runs, with eight on the year. Cisneros hit a two-run home run in the first and had a solo shot in the fifth.

Cal Poly tied the game with three singles, a hit batter, an error and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The Mustangs scored a run in the eighth on a two walks and an RBI single by Michael Sanderson.

Austin Sodder (6-4) picked up the win, allowing three runs on seven hits in six-plus innings and had one walk. Ryan Lillie had his seventh save of the year, securing the final five outs.

Kyle Smith dropped to 5-6 on the year, giving up five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings with three walks and five strikeouts.

Sanderson, Kevin Morgan and Nick Meyer each had two hits, and Brett Barbier extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The second game of the series will be played Saturday at 6 p.m., with Erich Uelmen taking the mound for Cal Poly.
