Cal Poly’s Sierra Hyland ties school-record with 11th conference player of the week award

Cal Poly softball pitcher Sierra Hyland tied a school record when she was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the 11th time in her career Monday.

She tied former volleyball outside hitter Kylie Atherstone, who won 11 times in her career from 2005 to 2008. It is the fourth-highest total in conference history.

Hyland won twice last week, posting a 0.41 ERA in 17 innings.

Hyland finished the season 15-7. She had the eighth-best ERA in Division I at 1.19, and was 35th in strikeouts with 194. She led the Big West Conference in ERA.


Schuknecht named Big West Player of the Week

Cal Poly outfielder John Schuknecht was named the Big West Conference Field Player of the Week on Monday.

Schuknecht, a senior, was 6 for 14 with eight RBI, seven runs and two homers in four games last week. One of the homers was a grand slam.

The outfielder is hitting .283 on the season, and leads the Mustangs in RBI with 43. He also is tied for the team lead with six home runs and is tied for second on the team with 33 runs scored.
