The Cal Poly baseball team ended a six-game Big West Conference losing streak Friday, beating UC Irvine 9-1 at Baggett Stadium in the first game of a three-game series.
The Mustangs used a three-run fourth inning and five-run seventh to pull away.
Cal Poly’s Spencer Howard (3-1), filling in for the team’s suspended starters in his first collegiate start, struck out five over six innings and allowed five hits and one earned run. Slater Lee pitched three innings in relief.
Alex McKenna had a two-run double in the seventh and had a home run in the fourth, finishing with a season-high five RBI. Brett Binning was 3 for 4 with two RBI, and catcher Nick Meyer was 3 for 5. Three other Mustangs had two hits.

Meyer also threw out two runners stealing and has thrown out 20 on the year.
It was the Mustang’s first Big West win since April 24.
The series will continue tomorrow at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
