The Cal Poly softball team swept a Friday doubleheader against UC Riverside, 3-1 and 2-1, at Bob Janssen Field.
In the series opener, Cal Poly took the lead in the first inning after a wild pitch by UC Riverside starting pitcher Tayler Misfeldt scored Stephanie Heyward from third. Sierra Hyland, who was on second when the play began, advanced to third and later scored after Misfeldt mishandled the throw from catcher Chelsea Holley.
The Mustangs made it 3-0 in the second on an RBI single by Heyward.
Hyland scattered five hits in a complete game for the Mustangs (26-23, 9-11 Big West). Holley hit a solo home run in the fourth on the first pitch she saw for the Highlander’s only run. Hyland conceded just two more hits over the remainder of the game.

In the second game, UC Riverside took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Holley hit a two-out RBI triple. The Mustangs responded in the bottom half of the inning when Breana West hit a two-out double to score Heyward. Moving Heyward into scoring position was Amanda Sandoval, who tied Stephanie Tam’s 2007 record of 20 sacrifices in a season.
Hyland hit a sacrifice fly to score Chelsea Convissar and give Cal Poly the lead.
Lindsey Chalmers allowed five hits and one earned run in a complete game for the Mustangs, who conclude the series and the 2016 season on Saturday at 1 p.m.
