The second-seeded Cal Poly men’s tennis team was defeated 4-1 by top-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, spoiling the Mustangs chance at a third Big West Tournament Championship in the past five years.
The title is UC Santa Barbara’s second in as many years, after beating UC Irvine in the championship match a year ago.
The Gauchos won the doubles point after Nicolas Moreno and Anders Holm topped Cal Poly’s Garrett Auproux and Tim Tan, 6-2.
UC Santa Barbara earned a pair of straight-set singles wins before Cal Poly sophomore Axel Damiens beat Cody Rakela, 6-4, 6-3, to make the score 3-1. Holm clinched the match and the championship for the Gauchos with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win over Cal Poly freshman Josh Ortlip.
