Cal Poly women’s tennis tops UC Riverside to open Big West tournament

The eighth-seeded Cal Poly women’s tennis team got off to a strong start at the Big West Conference Tournament on Wednesday morning.

The Mustangs (4-15) defeated ninth-seeded UC Riverside 4-0 in the opening round at Indian Wells Tennis Garden and advanced to play No. 1 seed Long Beach State at 8 a.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

In No. 1 doubles, Cal Poly’s Zoe Oedekerk and Dané Joubert defeated UC Riverside’s Karla Dulay and Tamila Vaksman, 6-3.

Molly Reed and Abigail Bacharach won the No. 3 doubles point for the Mustangs, defeating Abby Valera and Kassie Truong, 6-0.

Joubert then secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Natalie Penner in No. 5 singles.

Reed won her fifth straight singles match, defeating Vaksman by scores of 6-0 and 6-4 in the No. 6 position. She improved to 7-2 from the No. 6 spot this season.

Bacharach clinched the match with a two-set win against Caroline Hall, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 4 singles.
