The Cal Poly women’s basketball team dropped its Big West Conference opener to rival UC Santa Barbara on the road, losing 78-67 on Thursday.
Hannah Gilbert scored 22 points and Lisa Marie Sanchez had 15 points for Cal Poly.
Lynn Leaupepe scored 11 points and had a team-leading eight rebounds for the Mustangs.
The game saw a combined turnovers 53 between the two teams. Cal Poly scored 34 points in the fourth quarter — one point more than they scored in the first three quarters combined.

A five-point second quarter, and a 33 percent shooting percentage for the first half, put the Mustangs down 18 points at halftime. The Gauchos (4-11, 1-0) led by as many as 29 points with just under six minutes remaining in the third, but Cal Poly closed the gap, scoring nine consecutive baskets.
UC Santa Barbara shot 56 percent from the field for the game.
Cal Poly (7-7) outscored the Gauchos 34-18 in the final period.
The Mustangs end their road trip Saturday against UC Irvine at 2 p.m.
