Three Cal Poly runners claim Big West cross country honors

Less than a week after winning the Big West Conference women’s cross country championship, Cal Poly received some more good news Wednesday afternoon.

Peyton Bilo, who placed second at the Big West meet in 20 minutes, 36.87 seconds, was selected as the conference’s freshman of the year. Head coach Mark Conover, now in his 20th season leading the Mustangs, was chosen as the Big West women’s coach of the year for the third time in the past four seasons.

On the men’s side, Cal Poly’s Garrett Migliozzi was named the Big West freshman of the year, giving the Mustangs three of the top six individual honors. Migliozzi ran his way to a sixth-place finish at the Big West championship meet and was the top freshman finisher in that competition.

UC Santa Barbara’s Bryan Guijarro was selected as the Big West men’s athlete of the year, and Pete Dolan earned men’s coach of the year accolades after leading the Gauchos to their second straight conference championship.

UC Riverside’s Faith Makau was named the women’s athlete of the year.
