The Cal Poly women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the Big West Conference this winter, according a preseason media poll release by the conference Tuesday.
Hawaii was selected as the preseason conference favorite, collecting 147 points and 13 first-place votes. The Rainbow Warriors won 23 games en route to the Big West regular season title last season, the school’s first since 1993-94.
UC Riverside was second in the voting with 127 points and two first-place votes. Cal Poly, which also garnered one first-place vote, tallied 107 points and fourth-place CSUN received 100 points.
Cal Poly will have to replace the production vacated by the graduation of Ariana Elegado with an intriguing mix of returners and junior transfer Amanda Lovely, who redshirted last fall after beginning her career at Pepperdine.
No Mustangs were named to the preseason all-conference team. That group included Long Beach State’s Raven Benton, UC Davis’ Alyson Doherty, UC Irvine’s Mokun Fajemisin, UC Riverside’s Brittany Crain and Annelise Ito, and Hawaii’s Ashleigh Karaitiana.
