Cal Poly hires new football assistant coach

Cal Poly announced Wednesday that former Pacific University defensive coordinator Jacob Yoro will join the Mustangs’ coaching staff as the defensive secondary coach.

Yoro, who coached linebackers along with managing the defense at the Oregon-based university, will switch states with Cal Poly coach Neil Fendall, who is leaving college football to take a job as an administrator in the Oregon high school system. Fendall coached the defensive secondary the past three seasons.

Yoro, 34, has been coaching defenses since his career began in 2001 in his native Hawaii. After spending eight years in the high school ranks, Yoro spent one year as linebackers coach at the Montana Western before taking a job with Pacific in 2010.

Yoro played football at the Montana before his was career cut short by a knee injury. He was a part of Grizzly teams that advanced to the FCS playoffs in 1998 and 1999.

Yoro will be tasked with improving a Mustangs pass defense that ranked fifth in the Big Sky Conference, giving up 234 yards per game last season.
