Roundup: Cal Poly baseball blows 5-run lead at Pacific

The Cal Poly baseball team scored five runs in the top of the first inning and retook a five-run lead in the fourth, but the Mustangs gave it all back and more in an 11-8 loss to previously winless Pacific on Sunday. 

Pacific (1-13) had a five-run rally to tie the score at eight in the bottom of the fourth and broke the tie with a solo home run by Jed Sprague in the fifth.

Zach Zehner had a three-run home run for Cal Poly (4-8), his second homer of the season. Zehner batted 1 for 5 with two runs and four RBI. 

Brett Barbier, Jake Lesinski and Ryan Drobny each drove in a run for the Mustangs, Peter Van Gansen also scored twice, but Cal Poly failed to produce any multi-hit efforts.

Michael Gomez suffered his first loss, allowing two runs on four hits in two innings of relief. The Tigers were able to get five runs, three earned, on three hits and a walk against Taylor Chris, whose season ERA rose to 7.71.


Cal Poly evens Classic record in comeback win 

The Cal Poly softball team capped its own Mustangs Classic tournament with a third consecutive victory, a 2-1, come-from-behind win over Bryant. 

After Bryant took a one-run lead in the third inning, Emily Ceccacci had an RBI double in the fifth, and Stephanie Heyward scored on a throwing error after leading off the sixth with a double of her own.

Freshman pitcher Lindsey Chalmers earned the victory, allowing the lone run on eight hits and two walks while striking out four. 

Bryant had two base hits against Chalmers in the seventh, but sophomore Sierra Hyland came on to get the final two outs for her first save of the season.  


Cal Poly tops Utah State

After being swept in doubles, the Cal Poly men’s tennis team won four of six singles sets to secure a home victor over Utah State.

Ben Donovan, Garrett Auproux, Corey Pang and Axel Damiens all won. 


Cal Poly swept at UOP

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team lost 4-0 at Pacific, falling to 1-8 on the season.
