Elise Krieghoff tied a program record with five goals, three in the first half, and the Cal Poly women’s soccer team beat Fresno State 6-1 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Friday.
Megan Abutin converted a penalty kick in the 52nd minute to score the other goal for the Mustangs (4-4) and assisted on Krieghoff’s fourth and fifth goals in the second half.
Krieghoff’s single-game scoring total tied Wendy Jones’ performance against Southern California College in 1993. Krieghoff, a junior, now has 40 career goals and needs just five to tie Kolleen Kassis (1992-1995) for the all-time program record.
Cal Poly 2, San Francisco 1
The Mustangs extended their unbeaten streak to six matches by withstanding a late rally from the Dons in front of 6,856 spectators at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, the ninth-largest home crowd in program history.
Joseph Bolous knocked in a rebound in the 11th minute, and Matt LaGrassa scored a header near the right post in the 70th minute to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead against San Francisco and goalkeeper Chase Hauser, who transferred to the Dons after two seasons with the Mustangs.
Cal Poly goalkeeper Wade Hamilton saw his three-match shutout streak end when San Francisco’s Joshua Smith scored in the 87th minute, but Hamilton saved six shots on goal.
The match became physical in the second half as the teams combined for five yellow cards, all but one coming after the break. Cal Poly was whistled for 18 fouls to San Francisco’s seven.
