Cal Poly Roundup: Cal Poly players earn volleyball recognition

Cal Poly senior Chelsea Hardin and freshman Taylor Gruenewald earned Big West Conference all-conference volleyball honors Monday.

Hardin, an outside hitter, was named to the first team. She averaged 2.94 kills per game while hitting .259 in the 23 matches she played this season. In Big West matches, she averaged 2.91 kills per game and hit .201.

Gruenewald, a middle blocker, was named to the all-freshman team and was also honorable mention all-conference. She averaged 2.49 kills per game while hitting .302 in the 29 matches she played in. In Big West matches, she averaged 2.69 kills per game while hitting .310. 

She led the Mustangs with 74 blocks on the season and had 42 in conference matches.

Hawaii senior Emily Hartong is the player of the year for the second straight season, and UC Santa Barbara’s Ali Spindt was named freshman of the year. Cal State Northridge’s Jeff Stork and UC Santa Barbara’s Nicole Lantagne Welch are the coaches of the year.


Cal Poly signs six high schoolers

Cal Poly coach Brendan Buckley announced the signing of an impressive class to National Letters of Intent.

Five wrestlers are California state place winners, and a sixth was an Arizona state champ.

Glenn Farina was the Arizona Division I state champ at 132 pounds at Corona Del Sol High last year.

Leading the list of California high school signees is Folsom’s Nick Fiegener, who was 57-3 as a junior last year en route to a state second-place finish at 160.

Bryan Salinas of Northview High was the California state fourth-place finisher at 145 pounds in 2012 and was eighth at 170 pounds at the 2013 state meet.

Johnny Beltran of Servite High was seventh in the state meet last year at 182; Cortes Morales of Clovis West was seventh at 220 at state last season; and Abel Contreras of Porterville High was seventh at state last year at 132.
