Cal Poly men's soccer falls in Big West tourney

The Cal Poly men’s soccer season likely ended Tuesday night at Cal State Northridge after the Mustangs lost 4-1 in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament.

The Matadors’ four goals tied a conference tournament record with UC Irvine in 2008 and 2009 for most goals in a game. Sagi Lev-Ari scored for the Matadors just 37 seconds into the game. He scored his second goal of the game and his 13th of the season in the 62nd minute.

The Mustangs (10-9-2, 3-5-2) tied the score in the 32nd minute on defender Kip Colvey’s first goal of the season off an assist from John Chronopoulos. Cal Poly was on the verge of being tied heading into the halftime, but was called for a penalty kick in the 45th minute. Brian Behrad converted the kick for Cal State Northridge.

Nicolas Camacho completed the scoring for the Matadors (14-5-1, 5-4-1) by converting a rebounded shot from Behrad.

Cal State Northridge finished with 12 shots on goal to Cal Poly’s six. Wade Hamilton made eight saves for Cal Poly, and Adam Hobbs made five saves for Cal State Northridge.

In a physical game, Cal Poly was called for 17 fouls and Cal State Northridge had 12. Ruben Duran and Connor Drechsler were given yellow cards in the second half for Cal Poly. The Matadors’ Pol Schonhofer Barta was given a yellow card as well. Duran was booked for a red card in the 72nd minute.
