Cal State Fullerton ended Cal Poly’s record-breaking season Thursday night at Titan Stadium, when it topped the Mustangs 4-3 in the shootout of the Big West Conference Tournament semifinal match.
Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the top-seeded Mustangs fought their way through double overtime and a shootout to try to stay in contention for the championship, but fell short by one penalty kick.
Cal Poly (11-7-1, 7-1-0) started the game with an early lead, when Sara Lancaster broke away and scored in the 27th minute.
Cal State Fullerton (8-6-6, 3-3-2) responded 10 minutes later when Nikki McCants scored on a volley in the box that went in the left corner.

Alyssa Giannetti had five saves on six attempts for the Mustangs.
In the shootout, Lancaster, Elise Krieghoff and Megan Wagner made their kicks for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs got off to an early 16-3 lead, allowing them to cruise to a 25-6 win in their Pac-12 opener over host Cal State Bakersfield.
Sean Dougherty won by major decision and Sohrab Movahedi, Dominic Kastl, Spencer Empey and Britain Longmire all won by decision for the Mustangs.
Cal State Bakersfield beat Cal Poly both times the teams met last season.
