Cal Poly Roundup: Samoodi honored by Big Sky Conference

Cal Poly cornerback Bijon Samoodi has been named the Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week for his performance in Saturday’s 34-16 win at UC Davis.

Samoodi had a fumble recovery, an interception and six tackles as the Mustangs defeated the arch-rival Aggies for the second straight season.

Sacramento State, which plays at Cal Poly on Saturday, had the offensive player of the week in quarterback Garrett Safron, who completed 41 of 58 passes for 412 yards and four touchdowns in a 51-48 overtime loss at Montana.

Cal Poly’s Nygren shoots 69 in Hawaii

Cal Poly’s Cole Nygren shot a 3-under 69 Monday during the first round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Princeville, Hawaii, but is only tied for 14th.

Mississippi State’s Chad Ramey set a blistering pace, shooting a 9-under 63 to take the individual lead, two shots better than Cal State Fullerton’s Mark Anguiano.

Cal State Fullerton shot a 272 to take the team lead, two shots ahead of Mississippi State. Cal Poly is tied with San Diego for 11th place at 1-over 289.

Poly’s Giannetti honored by Big West

Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti has been named the Big West Conference women’s soccer defensive player of the week.

Giannetti posted her sixth shutout of the season Thursday with three saves in a 1-0 win over UC Davis that clinched the Big West regular-season title for the Mustangs (11-7, 7-1) and earned Cal Poly the top seed in this week’s conference tournament in Fullerton.
