Cal Poly Roundup: Mustangs roll past Sacramento State for men's soccer win

The Cal Poly men’s soccer team got off to a quick start by scoring first in the 21st minute on a George Malki goal in a home victory against Sacramento State on Saturday. 

The Mustangs (10-6-2, 3-3-2 Big West Conference) went on to beat the Hornets 4-2. 

Andrew Gosselin of Sacramento State (3-10-3, 1-7-0) answered in the 34th minute when he scored on a free kick from the right edge of the box. 

The Mustangs got the lead back in the second half when the Hornets scored an own goal in the 57th minute. 

Cal Poly extended its lead to 3-1 when George Malki assisted up the field through the box to forward Mackenzie Pridham, who scored from 10 yards out in the 63rd minute.

Sacramento State’s Luna Edwin scored in the 68th minute, but the Mustangs held onto their lead, and Kevin Atkins added one more goal in the 89th minute to cap the scoring   

Goalie Wade Hamilton played the full 90 minutes and had one save.

UC Santa Barbara 3, Cal Poly 0

The Gauchos topped the Mustangs in a tough third set to beat the Mustangs at home, 25-20, 25-12, 26-24. 

The final set had 10 ties and three lead changes after Cal Poly’s Hannah Schleis had back-to-back kills and tied the set at 24. 

UC Santa Barbara then scored two straight points to complete the sweep. 

Senior Megan McConnell led Cal Poly (10-12, 4-4 Big West) with 12 kills, and outside hitter Hannah Schleis tallied 10. 

Taylor Gruenwald, Maddie Kuber and Lexi Reddick added three kills each for the Mustangs. 

Libero Steffi Sooter and setter Kate Walters had 10 digs apiece for the Mustangs. 

Ali Barbeau led UC Santa Barbara (13-8, 8-1) with 16 kills, and Leah Sully had 14 digs.
