Cal Poly Roundup: Mundell hits walk-off homer for Mustangs in baseball win over San Jose State

Freshman designated hitter Brian Mundell hit a one-out, full-count, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Cal Poly baseball team a 6-5 comeback victory over visiting San Jose State on Tuesday.

The home run was Mundell’s only hit. He finished 1 for 4 with two runs scored.

After Cal Poly (14-2) got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans scored five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

Matt Carroll hit a two-out, two-run double that chased Cal Poly starter Kyle Brueggemann. Brueggemann gave up five runs, all earned, on nine hits in 4 2⁄3 innings. 

The Mustangs rallied with one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh before Jordan Ellis hit an RBI single in the eighth to even the score.

Ellis finished 2 for 4 with three RBI and a triple.

San Jose State (4-12) had a runner on third in the ninth and 10th innings, but each time Reed Reilly, who picked up the win for Cal Poly, stranded the runner with inning-ending strikeouts.

Kalei Contrades (0-2) gave up the Mundell home run after retiring the first four Mustang batters he faced. 

Designated hitter Matt Lopez was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored for  the Spartans, who outhit the Mustangs 14-11.


Frias given Big West honors

Chris Frias of the Cal Poly men’s track team was named the Big West Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week.

Frias won the 3,000 meters in a nonconference dual at Fresno State on Saturday, finishing in 8 minutes, 17.71 seconds, just ahead of teammate Sean Davidson, who finished in 8:19.44.

Frias advanced to the NCAA West Regional in the 10,000 last yea  and won the individual conference title in cross country with an 8K time of 24:10.
