Cal Poly’s softball team used an eight-run third inning to take an 11-0 lead over Long Island en route to a 14-2 win in the early game Sunday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City.
In the second game, Cal Poly (5-10-1) had its first tie in school history, finishing 1-1 with Utah.
The game was called after 61⁄2 innings because of travel considerations.
Chloe Wurst went six innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.

Against Long Island, Mariah Cochiolo was 2 for 3 with a team-high four RBI, Kim Westlund was 1 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Whitley Gerhart was 1 for 1 with two RBI and three walks.
Nicole Innamorato (1-1) pitched five innings in the mercy-rule-shortened game to get the win.
