Cal Poly Roundup: Mustangs edge San Francisco in baseball

In a game dominated by pitching, the Cal Poly baseball team scratched out a run in the top of the ninth to clinch the series from the Dons in San Francisco with a 1-0 win on Saturday.

Cal Poly (2-0) first baseman Jordan Brower drew a one-out walk in the ninth. Center fielder David Armendariz advanced Brower to third base with a single to right field before designated hitter Brian Mundell hit into a fielder’s choice to plate Brower.

Matt Imhof (1-0) shut down the Dons for eight innings, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out four. Michael Holback pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.

Aba Bobb (0-1) gave up four hits and the costly walk in relief of starter Alex Balog, who shut out the Mustangs for seven innings and only allowed three hits and two walks.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal Poly 7, Cal State Stanislaus 0

The Mustangs (2-4) did not lose a set to the visiting Warriors.

Cal Poly’s No. 1 doubles team of Louise Oxnevad and Alexa Lee won 8-1, Oxnevad won her singles match 6-4, 6-1 and Lee won 6-0, 6-0. 

Jen Cornea and Ane McPike won their double sets 8-1, Cornea won her singles match 6-1, 6-1 and McPike won 6-0, 6-0.

SOFTBALL

San Diego State 5, Cal Poly 2

The Mustangs fell in their second game of the day at the Aztec-hosted Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego on Friday.

Kayla May gave San Diego State the early lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.

Cal Poly evened the score at 2 in the bottom of the third on two RBI singles by Jillian Anderson and Kim Westlund.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh inning, when the Aztecs plated three runs.
