Returner might be Northern Colorado's top Gunn

If there’s an area where  Northern Colorado might frighten an opponent, it’s in the return game, where Dominic Gunn has helped keep the Bears (1-4, 0-2 Big Sky Conference) competitive.

His 98-yard kickoff return to open the second half against Montana last week cut the Grizzlies’ lead to 10-7. His 74-yard punt return gave Northern Colorado a 10-7 lead at Sacramento State in September.

Also with a 69-yard return to his credit, Gunn averages 18.8 yards per punt return, ranking second in the FCS.

“He’s got good speed,” Cal Poly head coach Tim Walsh said, “but to be honest with you, they’re doing a great job with their return. ... I think they’re doing some good things schematically, and they’re doing them well.”

Returns are an area of concern for Cal Poly after the Mustangs allowed Wyoming to average 19.9 yards on five punt returns in a 24-22 win last month, including returns of 47 and 37 yards.

“I think we’ve improved,” Walsh said. “After that game, there was definitely an emphasis that was made to the players, and our players’ eyes have gotten bigger. We have gotten better. I think our kickoff team has played fairly well this year, too.”
