The Cal Poly men’s and women’s cross country teams swept the UC Santa Barbara Lagoon Open on Saturday in the season opener for both squads.
True freshman Laura Hollander led the Mustangs women when she set a 5K course record in 16 minutes, 42.12 seconds, outpacing second-place Daniella Moreno of the Gauchos by nearly a minute.
Savannah Pio (17:53.78) finished fourth, Rachel Blush (18:11.07) finished sixth and Sara Van Dyke (18:16.66) finished eighth for Cal Poly, which defeated UC Santa Barbara 29-33.
On the men’s side, the Mustangs placed four runners in the top five as they cruised past the Gauchos 23-45 in the 8K race.

Chris Frias (24:56.04) led the way for Cal Poly in second place, with Sean Davidson placing third (25:00.58), David Cardona placing fourth (25:16.76) and Mitch Moriarty placing sixth (25:21.69).
Unattached runner Scott Smith was the men’s individual winner in 24:22.46.
Both Cal Poly teams will be off until Sept. 21 when they travel to the UCLA Invitational.
WOMEN’S SOCCERCuesta 3, Lassen 0
Noelle Linamen scored a goal in the ninth minute for the Cougars (1-0-1), lifting Cuesta to the early lead, and was one of three different Cougars to score.
Kailyn Murphy added a goal in the 37th minute, and Tanya Khaledei scored again late in the second half for Cuesta.
Madison Samora, Josie Schneider and Allison French each had an assist for the Cougars.
