Cal Poly women’s basketball senior Kristina Santiago was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for the fifth time this season on Monday after leading the Mustangs to a share of the conference title last week.
She has received the honor 10 times in her career.
The 6-foot-2 forward averaged 22.5 points and 12 rebounds with a 45.7 field goal percentage in wins over Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge last week. The Mustangs return to action on Thursday night, when they play at UC Davis.
Cal Poly baseball
Cal Poly junior outfielder Mitch Haniger earned the Big West player of the week award after boosting his batting average to .345 by hitting 8 for 18 with two doubles and a home run in a four-game weekend sweep of Loyola Marymount.
He posted multiple hits and RBI in three of the four games to help Cal Poly improve to 7-1, enough to put the Mustangs at No. 22 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national ranking. It is the first time the Mustangs have been ranked since the 2009 season.
Cal Poly will travel to San Diego State on Thursday at 7 p.m. to start the four-day Aztec Invitational.
Arroyo Grande High boys golf
The Arroyo Grande High boys golf team shot a 406 to finish fifth out of 10 teams in the Central Coast Invitational at the par-72 Santa Maria Country Club.
Doug Merrin led the Eagles with a 77, followed by Mitch Martin’s 79, Nathan Bickel’s 81, Jordan McMurphy’s 84 and Josh Schneider’s 85.
