Stanford tops Cal Poly in wrestling match

Stanford’s Garrett Schaner posted a major decision over Gianpier Yanez in the final bout that left the Cal Poly wrestling team with a 23-17 loss at Mott Gym on Sunday.

Cal Poly trailed 19-10, but with 141-pounder Boris Novachkov posting a 10-1 major decision and 149-pounder Kyle Chene posting a 3-1 decision, the Mustangs were able to pull within 19-17.

The Mustangs also trailed 10-0 after losing the first three bouts, but Ryan Smith scored six takedowns, an escape, three penalty points and riding time en route to a 17-5 major decision over Alan Yen at 197 pounds.

Atticus Disney then fell to Dan Scherer 3-1 in overtime, and the Cardinal forfeited the 125-pound bout to bring the deficit to 13-10.

But 133-pounder Ryan Mango pinned Cal Poly’s Jake Tanenbaum in 1 minute, 37 seconds to put Stanford up 19-10.

The Mustangs posted six singles wins in a split dual against Fresno State and No. 8 Cal.

Sophomore Jen Cornea swept Fresno State’s Melissa McQueen 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles spot. At No. 4, Jocelyn Davis defeated Fresno State’s Bianca Madoc, 1-6, 6-0 6-4, and sophomore Katherine Webb defeated Tanya Murtagh of Fresno State at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0.

Cal Poly’s Ireen Kuipers and Kristine Kouyoumjian then swept at No. 7 and No. 8 to round out singles play.
