College Roundup: Clemmensen helps lead Cal Poly to wrestling win

Former Atascadero High standout Michael Clemmensen pinned San Francisco State’s Martin Ruiz in 6 minutes, 11 seconds for his first collegiate victory as the Cal Poly wrestling team defeated the Gators 25-13 in a Friday road dual.

Boris Novachkov, at 141 pounds, earned a 16-0 technical fall win over Daniel Flores to seal the win for the Mustangs.

Atticus Disney (285) notched five takedowns in a 13-3 major victory over Mark Martelaro, and Ryan Smith (197) recorded seven takedowns on his way to a 16-5 victory for Cal Poly over Thomas Martin.

Cal Poly opens competition at Stanford Diving Invitational

Cal Poly kicked off the three-day Stanford Diving Invitational with diving competitions against Stanford, Cal, UCLA, Fresno State and San Jose State.

In the women’s preliminary round, Mustang sophomore Sami McIntyre tallied 224.50 points for a 10th-place finish, Meaghan O’Meara placed 17th (198.95) and Molly McElrath earned 20th (162.80).

In the men’s preliminaries, freshman Elliot Adams finished 11th (202.95). He finished third in the consolation round with 222.15 points.In the women’s consolation round, McIntyre placed fifth with 221.55 points.

Cal Poly tennis has mixed results

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team was swept by Cal at the Winter Invitational before taking two of three doubles matches from St. Mary’s.

The Golden Bears did not drop a set in singles play against the Mustangs, including 6-0, 6-1 wins by Tayler Davis over Gabby Gatewood, Annett Schutting over Katherin Webb and Annie Goransson over Jocelyn Davis.

Cal features six singles players ranked in the top 100 in the country.

Cal Poly fared better in doubles against St. Mary’s, with Jen Cornea and Gatewood defeating Catherine Isip and Carla Lindlar 8-5 and Webb and Ane McPike defeating Catherine Leduc and Anna Chkhikvishvili.
