Will Taylor missed on a game-tying 3-point shot attempt with seven seconds remaining for Cal Poly, and Cal State Long Beach’s Casper Ware connected on two free throws to seal the 49ers’ 55-50 Big West Conference men’s basketball win over the Mustangs on Thursday.
Taylor had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead Cal Poly (9-6, 0-2). David Hanson added 11 points, and Amaurys Fermin scored nine for Cal Poly.
Sophomore guard Chris Eversley grabbed a career-high seven rebounds to go with six points off the bench for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly jumped to an early 13-4 lead after forcing five Long Beach turnovers in the first five minutes. However, the 49ers answered with a 12-2 run of their own and held a 25-23 lead at halftime.
Ware had a game-high 17 points for Long Beach.

Kristina Santiago and Kayla Griffin each recorded double-doubles to lead the Mustangs (5-9, 2-0 Big West) over the Titans (7-7, 1-2) in Fullerton.
Santiago recorded game-highs of 29 points and 14 rebounds.
Santiago made 12 of 16 field goals and was 5 of 6 at the free throw-line. Her 690 total rebounds leave her just two shy of the school record for career rebounds.
Griffin had 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Cal Poly trailed 4-2 early but rebounded to go on an 8-0 run to hold a 10-4 lead at the 16:18 mark when Santiago hit a jumper. The Mustangs would not trail the rest of the way.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Mya Olivier with 14 points, followed by Kathleen Iwuoha and Tailer Butler with 11 points each.
