College roundup: Mustangs fall to the Lions in L.A.

Forward Kristina Santiago, led the Cal Poly women’s basketball team with 33 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, but the Mustangs fell to Loyola Marymount 73-72 on Monday.

Santiago also led the Mustangs with four assists and two blocks, but couldn’t stop the Mustangs (3-8) from dropping their sixth straight game.

Christine Martin scored 11 points, and Caroline Reeves added 10 for Cal Poly.

Kayla Griffin had seven rebounds.

Men’s basketball

Cal Poly forward David Hanson was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week.

Hanson, a senior, scored 16 points in a win over Menlo College and a team-high 12 points in a victory over Fresno State last week. He became the 17th player in school history to reach 1,000 points in his career.


Cal Poly’s Jake Romanelli and Asa Jackson were named to The Sports Network/ FCS All-American team.Romanelli, a Templeton High graduate, was named to the second team.

He rushed for 1,020 yards and seven touchdowns this past season, and also caught 14 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Jackson was named to the third team. He had two interceptions this past season — and returned both for touchdowns. He also returned 14 kickoffs for a 25.8 yards per return average, and eight punts, averaging 18.0 yards per return.
