College Roundup: Cal Poly's Jackson third-team AP All-American

Cal Poly senior cornerback Asa Jackson has been selected to the Associated Press Football Championship Subdivision All-American third team, becoming the first Mustang to be honored by the news agency in three years.

Named Cal Poly’s most valuable defensive player last week, Jackson became the first player in the history of the Great West conference to earn first-team defensive honors in four seasons.

Jackson had 54 tackles in his senior season and two interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns.

Benefield wins weekly honor

Cal Poly swimmer Gloria Benefield has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s Athlete of the Week after leading the Mustangs to a win at the Finis Collegiate Invitational last weekend.

Benefield won the 200-yard backstroke (in 1 minute 58.96 seconds), the 100 backstroke (55.87) and the 100 butterfly (56.48) for Cal Poly.
