College Roundup: DesRoches wins title for Cal Poly in Las Vegas

Cal Poly senior wrestler Ryan DesRoches earned the 174-pound title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday.

Third-seeded DesRoches upset second-seeded Nick Heflin of Ohio State 3-2 before defeating Justin Zeerip of Michigan 6-5 in the title match.

Despite trailing Zeerip 5-2 after two periods, DesRoches rallied for three straight points and escaped in the second tiebreaker for the one-point victory.

Mustangs 141-pounder Boris Novachkov and 285-pounder Atticus Disney each lost twice and both finished fifth.

Brandon Rocha, the last Cal Poly wrestler still alive in the wrestlebacks after Friday, was eliminated in a 9-2 loss by Nebraska’s Ridge Kiley.


AT&T Winter National Championships

None of Cal Poly’s seven remaining swimmers advanced to the finals in their last five events.

In the women’s 200 backstroke, Katrina Anderson finished with a time of 2 minutes, 20.06 seconds, with Gloria Benefield placing just behind at 2:20.07.

Benefield also swam in the 200 butterfly (2:21.05) with Belen Enguidanos (2:28.01) and Kylie France (2:24.94).

France also swam in the 200 breastroke (2:46.31) with Angie Haven (2:39.31).

Cal Poly’s remaining swimmers were Rachel Cleak who completed the women’s 100 freestyle in 58.58 seconds, and Konrad Antoniuk who swam the men’s 1,500 freestyle in 16:15.6.


Cuesta 78, Orange Coast 67

The Cougars beat the Pirates for third place at the Cuesta Conoco Phillips Invitational.

Kati Sheldon led Cuesta with 20 points, and Katie Rodriguez added 19. Former Atascadero High standout Alyssa Palma had 18 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Barstow won the championship game against San Mateo.
