Area Roundup: Former Cal Poly wrestler headed to California Wrestling Hall of Fame

Former Cal Poly wrestler Lou Montano is among nine inductees for the Class of 2012 into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Montano compiled a record of 112-16-1 in his four-year career as a Mustang, setting a record for most average wins per season and was twice named an NCAA Division I All-American.

He finished second in the country at 158 pounds with a 41-2-1 record in 1983 after finishing eighth at the NCAA Tournament in 1982.

Montano also coached for three seasons at Cal Poly before becoming an assistant at Cal State Bakersfield for five. He was named head coach at Columbia University in 1992, where he coached until 2000.

SLO Youth Rugby to register new players

SLO Youth Rugby is now registering new players for the upcoming 2012 season.

A free clinic will be held at Talley Field from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 3.

Age groups will include high school boys and girls, boys under-12 and under-14 and 8-and-up for touch rugby.
