The Cal Poly women’s tennis team had three players represented in the round of 64 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday at Stanford, highlighted by sophomore Jennifer Cornea’s performance.
Cornea had the Mustangs’ lone singles victory, defeating Fresno State’s Charlotte Newell in the opening round 6-4, 6-2 before being ousted by Fresno State’s seventh-seeded Marianne Jodoin 6-2, 6-1.
The Mustangs’ Ane McPike and Jocelyn Davis each advanced following the withdrawal of an opponent through injury or illness. But in the second round, Washington State’s Charlotte Konning eliminated McPike 6-3, 6-1, and Cal’s Cecilia Estlander knocked out Davis, 6-0, 6-0.
Alexa Lee was defeated in the first round by San Francisco’s Blair Reed 6-0, 6-1, and sophomore Gabrielle Gatewood lost her first match against Fresno State’s Melissa McQueen 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, Cornea and Lee reached the final 32 by defeating Sacramento State’s Katharina Knoebl and Sophie Lohscheidt 8-3. Lee and Cornea will face San Jose State’s Sandra Florea and Erica Medlin at 9 this morning.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
San Diego State 168, Cal Poly 130
The Aztecs won nine of 16 events to defeat Cal Poly in a nonconference dual meet at the Anderson Aquatic Center.
Senior Kristen Meier led San Diego State with first-place finishes in both the 3-meter dive (283.70) and 1-meter dive events (256.95).
Cal Poly’s Angie Haven was victorious in the 100 (1 minute, 4.94 seconds) and 200 breaststrokes (2:18.96), while also placing third in the 100 butterfly (57.95).
Other first-place Cal Poly finishers include senior Gloria Benefield in the 200 backstroke (2:02.39), Kylie France in the 400 individual medley (4:27.60), Belen Enguidanos in the 200 butterfly (2:01.44) and Lacey Buck in the 500 freestyle (5:01.03).
The Cal Poly team of Rachel Cleak, Kelsey Engel, Amy Morales and Jill Jones also won the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.40).
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
Long Beach Tournament
Cuesta (15-10) lost 14-5 to sixth-ranked Long Beach and 11-7 later in the day to third-ranked Fullerton.
Carly Glogovac scored two goals against Long Beach, and Kayla Billingsley, Julia Tatarian and Alexandria Bernard each scored once. Goalie Loren Kasenberg had three saves.
Against Fullerton, Alex O’Connor and Haylie Fry both scored two goals for Cuesta. Kasenberg had three saves for the Mustangs.
Cuesta is in the ninth-place bracket of the 21-team tournament and will play Palomar at 8 this morning and will have another match later in the day.
