Cal Poly junior tennis player Andre Dome took the nation’s second-ranked player to three sets in the first round of the ITA Championship on Thursday before falling 7-6, 5-7, 6-1 on Thursday.
After losing the first set to Ohio State’s Blaz Rola, Dome rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second, winning five straight games to take the set 7-5. Dome would win just one game in the third.
According to a Cal Poly spokesman, Dome advanced further than any previous Mustangs player at the ITA Championship. Dome had to win three straight matches to make it to the opening round of the tournament.
Dome advanced in the consolation bracket, defeating Alex Musialek of Kentucky in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. He will play Illinois’ Stephen Hoh in the second round of the consolation bracket today at 9:30 a.m.
