College roundup: 49ers rally to top Mustangs in volleyball

The Cal Poly volleyball team couldn’t capture its first Big West Conference win of the season Saturday night, as Long Beach State rallied to take the fourth and fifth sets to grab a 3-2 win over the Mustangs.

Long Beach State won the first set 25-22 before the Mustangs won the next two 26-24, 25-21. But facing a one-game deficit, the 49ers won the last two 25-21, 16-14 en route to the win.

Kristina Graven led the Mustangs (5-10, 0-2 Big West) with 28 kills in the losing effort. Two others recorded double-figure kills against the 49ers. Jennifer Keddy had 17 kills, and Catie Smith had 13.

Defensively, Lauren Law led Cal Poly with 22 digs, Stacia Williams had 11 and both Graven and Smith had 10.

Cal Poly and Long Beach State tied for second in the Big West last season.

WOMEN’S WATER POLOCuesta 17, West Valley 3; Diablo 7, Cuesta 4

Cuesta split its matchups at the Cabrillo Tournament.

The Cougars sprinted to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 13-0 at halftime before easing up in the second half against West Valley.

Alex O’Connor, Erin Casey and Alexandria Bernard each scored three goals to pace Cuesta (9-3). Erin Hasenkamp had two goals.

Michaela Billingsley, Carly Glogovac, Bailey Kelley, Julia Tatarian, Amanda Brown and Katie Klosterman each contributed one goal. Loren Kasenberg had two saves, and Randi Krueger had three saves while splitting time in goal.

Against Diablo, Kasenberg’s 13 saves weren’t enough. O’Connor, Bernard, Kelley and Tatarian each scored a goal in the balanced attack.

CROSS COUNTRYCal Poly men at Griak Invitational; Cal Poly women at Stanford Invitational

The Cal Poly men finished seventh in the team standings in Minneapolis, while the women placed third in Stanford.

Junior David Cardona led the men after finishing ninth with a time of 24 minutes, 19 seconds over the 8K course. Daniel Gonia was the next Cal Poly runner to cross the finish line, placing 21st in 24:38.

For the women, Leanne Fogg (20:57) placed 10th over the 6K course in Stanford, and Meghan Breadmore (21:10) placed 14th.

WRESTLINGCuesta at Bakersfield Duals

Cuesta had two wrestlers go undefeated as the Cougars went 2-2.

The Cougars beat East Los Angeles 40-6 and Bakersfield 37-6 and lost to Santa Ana 29-21 and Mt. San Antonio College 35-15.

Michael Macalister went 4-0 at 174 pounds, and Bradley Beaudette went 4-0 at 184 pounds.

Three other wrestlers went 3-1 for Cuesta: Matt Correa at 133 pounds, Jonathan Gay at 141 pounds and Spaso Ilich at 149 pounds.
