Area Roundup: Mixed martial arts event to benefit Cal Poly wrestling

A mixed martial arts showcase to benefit the wrestling programs of both Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield will be held Oct. 1 at the Madonna Inn Expo Center. Doors for the event open at 4:30 p.m., with the first fight scheduled for 6 p.m.

The professional card features Anthony Ruiz against Mike Duro Moreno, as well as Cruz Gomez vs. Darren Crisp, among others.

Arroyo Grande lineman to play in top game

Arroyo Grande High senior offensive tackle Cody Hunstad was recently selected to play in the upcoming Blue-Grey National All-Star Football Game, Eagles coach Tom Goossen said Wednesday.

The game will take place in Tampa, Fla., on Jan. 14 — two weeks before National Signing Day on Feb. 1 — at Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound Hunstad has helped block for an offense averaging 371.6 yards of totals offense per game this season.

Arroyo Grande boys water polo team wins

Sixteen different players scored one goal apiece for the Arroyo Grande High boys water polo team in a 16-7 PAC 7 win over Pioneer Valley.

Among the scorers from the Eagles (1-2, 1-1) were each of their goalkeepers, who got to play in the field for a change, Clint Doucette and Chandler Mankins. They combined for three saves on the day while in goal.

Nipomo tops San Luis Obispo in girls golf

Sara Clark shot a nine-hole, 4-over 39 to lift the Nipomo High girls golf team to a 242-259 nonleague dual win over San Luis Obispo at Dairy Creek Golf Course.

Ashley Gonzales carded a 46 for the Titans to aid Clark’s medalist effort.

For the Tigers, Nora Zakaria led the way with a 42, followed by Gillian Johnson’s 47.

Mission Prep girls volleyball team wins

The Mission Prep girls volleyball team swept Dunn 25-16, 25-16, 25-14.

Rachel Hindmarsh had seven kills to lead the Royals (6-2), while Shannon Dudley had nine digs, five aces and two blocks.Sadie Casacca had nine digs, five aces and two blocks in the win.
