Cal Poly senior cornerback Asa Jackson was selected Monday as the Great West Conference’s preseason defensive player of the year by the league’s five head coaches for the second straight season.
Jackson, a senior from Sacramento, is also on the Buchanan Award Watch List and was listed as one of the top 10 returning defensive backs for the 2011 season by The Sports Network.
The three-time All-GWC first team selection and 2009 freshman player of the year will start at cornerback for the fourth straight season this fall. He had 55 tackles (40 solo), two interceptions and nine pass breakups in 2010 and averaged 12.6 yards on 17 punt returns.
Southern Utah quarterback Brad Sorensen was the preseason ffensive player of the year, and North Dakota punter Brett Cameron and UC Davis kicker Sean Kelley shared preseason special teams player of the year.
The Mustangs also received votes — but not enough to crack the top 25 — in the FCS Coaches Poll.
Cal Poly earned 71 points, unofficially placing the Mustangs 27th and just 13 points out of the top 25.
Defending FCS national champion Eastern Washington was first, and Montana was No. 12.
Cal Poly hosts Eastern Washington on Nov. 12 and visits Montana a week after opening the season at San Diego State on Sept. 3.
