College Roundup: Cal Poly suffers first Big West women's basketball lossloss

The Cal Poly women’s basketball team suffered its first loss in Big West Conference play this season on Thursday night, falling 81-61 at UC Davis.

The Aggies, the preseason favorite to win the league title, avenged a 74-65 loss at Mott Gym on Jan. 8.

The Mustangs (12-8, 8-1), who were off to their best start ever in Big West play, struggled from the floor, shooting only 38 percent to the 58 percent by UC Davis (16-5, 6-3).

The game was only really close for the first 10 minutes. After that, UC Davis started to build a lead that became a 43-26 margin at halftime.

Jonae Ervin led the Mustangs with 15 points and five assists. Rachel Clancy added 12 points and three assists, with Abby Bloetscher contributing 10 points and six rebounds.

Clancy earns academic honors

Clancy, a senior guard, qualified for Academic All-America status later this year after being named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 first team on Thursday.

Clancy, a native of Limerick, Ireland, and a former transfer from Duquesne, graduated from Cal Poly last year, Magna Cum Laude in biological sciences, with a concentration in anatomy and physiology. She’s currently pursuing a post-graduate degree in bio science and has earned dean’s list honors eight out of the nine quarters she was an undergrad student.


Orange Coast 8, Cuesta 6

Late runs by the Pirates keyed their victory as the Cougars dropped their season opener.

Cuesta had gotten off to a solid start, taking a two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning, which included an RBI triple from Chris Lindmark and an RBI double from Michael Camporeale.

The Cougars then fell victim to a five-run Pirates second inning. They were able to reclaim the lead in the fourth,but allowed runs in the seventh and eighth.

Phillip Gerber started on the mound for Cuesta and went 62⁄3 innings, giving up five hits and six runs, but only one of those was earned.

Former San Luis Obispo High star John Tiedemann closed out the game for the Cougars, going 21⁄3, allowing three hits and two runs, none of them earned.

The Cougars committed five errors.

Camporeale had three hits, two RBI and a run for Cuesta. Another former San Luis Obispo standout, Max Duval, had two hits, including a double, two RBI and a run.
