Mustangs wrestlers win in Tempe

The Cal Poly wrestling team got pins by Boris and Filip Novachkov early in the meet and picked up a 40-11 victory over Arizona State in a Pac-10 dual meet Sunday.

The Mustangs (8-1, 4-1 Pac-10) took a 31-0 lead after winning the first six bouts.

At 133 pounds, Boris Novachkov pinned Carlos Castro in 4 minutes, 46 seconds and improved to 22-1 on the season.

Filip Novachkov pinned Taihei Fukumoto in 6:29 at 149 pounds. It was only the second time this season Novachkov has wrestled at 149. He is now 9-6 on the year.

The Sun Devils (5-9, 1-2) forfeited two bouts.

Other winners for Cal Poly were Atticus Disney at 285, Ryan Smith at 197, Ryan DesRoches at 165 and Brandan Rocha at 133.

Cal Poly wrestles next at the California Collegiate Invitational on Saturday at San Francsico State.


The Rebels won four out of five singles matches in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event at Stanford on Saturday.

The Mustangs (1-2) got their lone singles win from senior Ashley Pane, who defeated Nives Pavlovic 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Cal Poly earned the doubles point thanks to wins from the teams of Amy Markhoff and Alexa Lee and Florence Lehane and Gabrielle Gatewood.
