Cal Poly's wrestling team loses to Boise State

Ninth-ranked Boise State won eight of 10 matches en route to a 29-6 victory over Cal Poly’s wrestling team Sunday in Boise, Idaho.

In the opening bout, Cal Poly’s Ryan DesRoches earned a 6-0 decision over Kurt Swartz at 165 pounds to improve to 26-5 this season.

Boise State (6-2-1, 1-1 Pac-10) then won six bouts in a row to take a commanding 20-3 lead.

Boris Novachkov got the only other win for the Mustangs (6-1, 2-1) when he defeated Levi Jones 4-2 at 141 pounds. Novachkov improved to 20-1 on the year.

The Broncos had a total of seven ranked wrestlers in their lineup.

Andrew Hochstrasser won a 16-2 major decision over Cal Poly’s Filip Novachkov at 133. Adam Hall posted a 14-6 major decision over Barrett Abel at 157, while Jason Chamberlain earned a 22-7 technical fall against Stephen Thalin at 149.

Jake Swartz beat Steven Vasquez 6-2 at 174, and Alan Bartelli edged Brandan Rocha 2-0 at 125.Cal Poly hosts Cal State Bakersfield in a Pac-10 dual Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Mott Gym.

WOMEN’S TENNISCal Poly at Cal Winter Invitational

On Saturday, freshmen Gabrielle Gatewood, Kathryn Webb and Jennifer Cornea each defeated players from St. Mary’s and improved to 3-0 on the season.

Gatewood defeated Diana Bukajeva 6-1, 6-2, while Webb knocked off Molly Aloia 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Cornea won the first set against Laurie Gingras 6-2 and was leading 4-2 in the second when Gingras was unable to finish the match.

Alexa Lee, Ashley Pane, Jocelyn Davis and Florence Lehane all lost singles matches for Cal Poly.

Cal Poly’s doubles teams matched up with Cal on Saturday. Gatewood teamed with Lehane to get a win over Alice Duranteau and Stephany Chang 8-6.

The doubles teams of Amy Markhoff and Lee and Pane and Davis lost matches against Cal.
